Patchwork is a technique used all over the world. Consisting in combining different elements of materials in different colors and patterns. This is a great fun and ecological method, because thanks to this, the remnants of materials do not end up in the trash! Patchwork is also the freedom to create - it all depends on our imagination.
A little history
Before the 19th century patchwork was the result of poverty. Poorer social strata could not afford to waste leftovers, so every smallest piece of material was used to darn clothes and bedding. Fragments that were still usable were cut out of the worn clothing and seewed into a stronger fabric. So that such clothes or bedspreads could serve them longer.
Later, this technique reached the higher realms. Unfashionable dresses were processed and valuable pieces of silk, velvet, glitter and accessories such as glitter and ribbons were cut out of them. After sharpening selected pieces of material to the canvas, they were sewn with decorative stitches using decorative threads. Then decorative appasavings, beads and feathers were seevened. This created amazing and original accessories such as bedspreads, treads, pillows, etc.
Application today
The patchwork trend is back in 2020 thanks to Alexander McQueen, who introduced patchwork creations to his collection. (If you like challenges, on the MCQUEEN CREATORS website, the creators have shared videos from each stage of the work so that everyone can try their hand at a patchwork inspired by the work of Mcqueen's team.) Youth idol Harry Styles, who starred in one of jonathan Anderson's cardigan shows, also had a big impact. Fans tried their hand at re-creating the sweater. As a result, patchwork has gained more and more importance in the fashion world.
In 2021, patchwork has become a hot trend. On the catwalks we could see the most popular brands that decided on patchwork projects.
One thing we know for sure, if green trends stay on the surface, then this is a great way to sustainability and revolution in the fashion world.
Fabrics for patchwork
We should choose materials that will endure frequent ironing during the sewing of the block. For example, cotton canvas and molons. You can successfully use cotton fabrics made of washed clothing, curtains or bedding, as long as they are still in good condition. Second-hand clothing stores will also provide us with many beautiful fabrics.
