Cotton – what is a fabric?

Cotton is a fabric known for many thousands of years. There are different types of cotton, from which a wide cross-section of clothesis made : from women's coats, to workwear, to children's T-shirts. In ancient Egypt, this material was used because of its airiness, which was perfect for warm climates. The popularity of cotton did not include only the pharaoh state. Before our era, it was also loved in Mexico or India. From our text you will learn what are the types of cotton and how to explain its phenomenon.

Cotton – what is this material?

Cotton is obtained from a plant called cotton or simply cotton. This material is the fiber surrounding the seeds of the cotton bush. What does cotton look like? Herodote, a well-known Greek historian, claimed that it is similar to sheep's wool. He pointed out, however, that cotton is an even more beautiful material. The raw material ready for harvest resembles a bit of a ball of cotton wool. However, it is not the appearance in the case of cotton that is most important, but its usefulness. Once hand-harvested, today with harvesters, it is one of the most important raw materials for fabric making in the world.

Cotton has a name, that is, types of cotton

A large number of cotton species can really shock. Thanks to this variety of varieties, cotton fabrics are used to create very different products. We will now introduce you to several types of cotton fabrics, and you will find that cotton really has many uses:

  • Egyptian cotton - an exclusive, expensive material characterized by long and soft fibers; it is very soft, making it ideal for the production of bed linen, underwear or bathrobes;
  • deduli - durable, thick fabric, used, among other things, for the production of bags and tablecloths,
  • velvet - a delicate fabric with a thin fleece cover, used to create curtains and clothes,
  • satin - a very popular type of cotton product, often used for the production of dresses,
  • bathyst - a soft material produced by canvas weave; it is airy, so it is ideal for sewing t-shirts for the summer,
  • flannel - a soft, heat-retaining fabric; it is used to create m.in. shirts and pajamas.

What so much noise, that is, with unusual properties of cotton

Do you know what makes cotton one of the most popular fibres in the world? It is ideal for many applications. The large take of cotton of various kinds is due to the material. Among its most important features you will find:

  • depending on the thickness - airiness or thermal insulation,
  • hygroscocopy,

Interestingly, cotton can be mercerized, which leads toincreased resistance and susceptibility to dyeing.

Advantages and disadvantages of cotton

When presenting the properties of cotton, we have already indicated some advantages of this fabric. But that's not all. It is worth mentioning that various types of cotton is an excellent material for allergy sufferers and people with skin problems. Its delicacy, softness and breathability are the perfect combination in this case. Another important advantage of cotton is that it is easy to remove stains from it. The washing process is also friendly, because thanks to its temperature resistance, clothing does not destroy itself and does not lose its properties.

Does cotton have any drawbacks? Yes, they include susceptibility to crease, which is due to the small elasticity of the fabric. Also, remember that cotton has been dry for a long time, which is due to its hygroscocopy.
