Beginner's Guide - everything you need to know about materials?

Differences between fabric and knitwear

Textiles, which are offered by our fabric wholesaler, are generally divided into two groups – fabrics and knitted fabrics. They differ in properties that result from the method of production. Thanks to it, knitted fabrics usually have a looser structure, are softer and very elastic. Fabrics, on the other hand, are easier to cut and sew, and clothes made of them rarely deform.

Convolution

Both groups of textiles are available in many varieties, and they are divided according to the weave. Double-sided weave fabrics:

  • Canvas weave – it is extremely durable. It is used for bedding, tablecloth, clothing and decorative fabrics,
  • Panama weave – is mainly used for the production of sports sweatshirts, suits and shirts,
  • double-sided twill weave – it is used for upholstery fabrics, clothing fabrics and outerwear. Materials of this type are distinguished by lower visibility of stains,
  • Weave – is used for the production of materials for outerwear, decorative and furniture fabrics, but also dresses.

One-sided weaves include:

  • one-sided twill weave – it is used to sew workwear, outerwear or trousers,
  • satin weave – used for the production of materials for elegant clothes, such as: evening dresses, skirts, shirts and blouses, expensive bedding, underwear or nightgowns.

Knitted fabrics can be intertwined in various ways, thanks to which they differ in appearance and properties.

Composition

The products offered by our sewing materials wholesaler are also made of various basic raw materials. The fibres from which the materials are made are divided into:

  • natural – the vast majority comes from animals (all types of wool and silk) or plants (cotton, linen),
  • synthetic – chemically produced fibers (polyester, polyamide, elastane),
  • artificial – made from cellulose (viscose). This material should not be afraid, because it has unusual properties despite the fact that it is produced artificially. More about viscose here.

What materials to use for sewing individual pieces of clothing?

T-shirts – should be comfortable and airy. For sewing basic T-shirts, cotton, viscose or loop knitwear are best suited. If you want to sew something more elegant, you can use the same fabrics as for shirts.

Shirts – mostly classic, men's shirts are made of cotton, but you do not have to limit yourself. Silk, viscose, cotton, linen or mixtures of these fabrics can be used to sew a shirt. Here it all depends on the cut you choose or the effect you want to achieve. For sewing loose, flowing shirts, silk or viscose are great.

Skirts – in this case, it all depends on the effect you want to achieve. Rigid materials are great for flared skirts. Adherent models require the use of knitted or woven fabric with an admixture of elastane. If you care about something light, then choose muslin or silk.

Dresses – the most popular fabric for summer dresses is viscose, which is light, does not crease, and breathes. If you like airy, delicate dresses, choose muslin. Cotton fabrics or linen are also great for holiday creations, due to their properties. For sewing evening dresses it is worth choosing thinner wool, taffeta or jacquard. Sports models will require the use of knitted fabrics.

Pants – fabrics for everyday trousers should contain the addition of elastane so that they do not restrict freedom of movement. Denim will be best. If you care about sports pants, choose cotton, synthetic fiber blends or lycra. In the case of classic sweatpants, stock up on a sweatpant. To sew elegant trousers, you can use cotton satin or silk, and in summer stylizations, linen materials work perfectly. Remember that even in more casual pants, you do not have to limit yourself only to smooth fabrics. A structural and patterned fabric will also work in this role. Izpol wholesale offers, for example, jacquard with a floral or geometric pattern.
